I can't believe I forgot about these bluebonnets that have been blooming beside our carport for the last few weeks. I always — almost always — love a volunteer in the garden and, although these volunteers haven't quite made it into the garden, they're still welcome. I have no idea where they came from. Birds, I suppose, but there aren't any bluebonnets particularly close to us. They did come up in an area where the soil was disturbed during last year's construction so maybe there were seeds in the soil and the disruption caused them to germinate. Whatever the reason, I'm hoping they spread. Any tips on helping that happen?
I also forgot about another plant that's sending up blooms: my manfreda maculosa. That's not the giant manfreda I posted a close-up of a few weeks ago (and which is supposed to produce a giant bloom stalk, maybe in May) but its daintier relative. Gorgeous--a much showier addendum than mine was! ;) All of your April bloggers' bloom day pictures are great, but I love the color of that hesperaloe.
Bluebonnets grow for MSStevens of Zanthan Gardens, and she gave me some seedlings last year which grew, bloomed and produced seed. I thought that would be the magic wand, but alas, only one new plant sprouted and I had to buy bluebonnet plants.
My instinct is to blame the dang squirrels, which seem to dig up so many small plants, tossing them to the side with roots exposed.
